Lithium-polymer differs from the other batteries as it contains the best capacity of electrolyte used. The battery is unique considering that a microporous electrolyte replaces the traditional porous separator. Lithium polymer offers slightly higher energy and can be made thinner as opposed to conventional lithium-ion. The manufacturing cost is said to be higher than the original design. These batteries acquire the highest capacity, but they do not have the memory effect.
The charge and discharge characteristics of Lithium-polymer are identical to other Lithium-ion systems and do not require a specific charger. Safety issues are also similar in terms of a needed protection circuit. During charging, it is possible the gas buildup can cause some prismatic and pouch cells to swell. The equipment manufacturers make allowances for this expansion. Lithium-polymer in a foil package is less durable than Lithium-ion in the cylindrical package.
