Protect and Serve: Law Enforcement Communications

Two-way radios play a huge role in police communications. Officers can quickly reach dispatch for further assistance, talk with other officers, and stay informed.

Being out on the field, police depend on two-way radios to help give them critical information such as locations, checking license details, alerting for additional assistance, and more.

Police are often alone on the field and two-way radio communication gives them piece of mind that they are in fact not alone and have access to many resources at the touch of a button.

The Importance of Police Radio Accessories

The two-way radio, paired with radio accessories, has been utilized in the police world for decades, evolving into dependable devices with increasing effectiveness.

Radios and accessories are used by police daily and are designed to make communicating easier and more dependable.

Accessories offer extended capabilities such as improved hearing, better communication, noise cancelation, and extended life.

What Radio Accessories Are Used by Police

Now, we’ll discuss the many accessories that police use every day with their two-way radio.

Battery

Police shifts are usually 8-12 hours long. Throughout the day, they are away from their desk and office. This means they don’t have access to charging stations if they’re radio is dying.

It’s important to have a battery with long life and high capacity to keep the radio powered throughout the day and night. It’s also smart to carry extra batteries to swap out if the radio dies.

Speaker Microphone

Speaker microphones or lapel mics connect to the side of a two-way radio and clip onto a utility vest or shoulder. A speaker microphone takes away the task of picking up your radio to hear transmissions and talk back.

With the lapel mic resting on your shoulder, the speaker broadcasts the radio transmissions by your ear so it’s easy to hear, especially in loud environments.

Speaker microphones have a push to talk (PTT) button on the side that lets you respond back, again without picking up the radio.

Receive Only Earpiece

Receive only earpieces can plug into a speaker microphone or radio and mute the transmissions from being broadcasted out loud. The earpieces acoustic tube and ear tip rest in your ear canal, letting you hear radio communication loud and clear.

Because earpiece silence incoming radio transmissions, it prevents any classified or critical information from being heard by a civilian, such as warrants.

Holsters

Two-way radio holsters protect the radio from accidental drops, weather, and prevents it from getting lost.

Holsters loop around utility belts and hold the radio by your side. The last thing you want to do is lose your thousand-dollar radio because it’s not secure.

Holsters can be made from nylon or leather, and come in a variety of styles such as belt loop, clip, and d ring.

That covers the main accessories used by law enforcement daily to help improve their communication. Law Enforcement communications are one of the most important elements of protecting the public and themselves.
